Before you start

Who can use this feature

Supported on any team or plan.

Any publisher for a widget or plugin can upload a playground file to the resource.

Publishers can upload any Figma Design, FigJam, or Figma Slides files they have can edit access to.

Playground files are Figma Design, FigJam, or Figma Slides files that supplement plugins and widgets to show when and how to use the plugin or widget. They are especially helpful for showing how plugins or widgets are used on specific layers.

For example, a spell check plugin might include a playground file with misspelled text. A user can duplicate the playground file and try the plugin on the misspelled text.

You can access a resource's playground file by clicking the Try it out button from the resource's page in the Figma Community. The playground file is duplicated and saved to their drafts folder.

Add a playground file

To include a playground file with your plugin or widget, you'll need to go through the plugin's or widget's publishing process.

  • Learn how to publish a plugin →
  • Learn how to publish a widget →

Any Figma Design, FigJam, or Figma Slides files you have can edit access to can be used as a playground file, and do not need to be published to the Figma Community.

Once a resource is published, the playground file won't appear as a resource on the publisher's profile.

Note: If you insert the development version of a widget into your playground file, only publishers of the widget will be able to run it.

Update a playground file

If you’ve updated your playground file and need the update reflected in the associated plugin:

  1. Open a file on the Figma desktop app.
  2. Open the publishing modal:
    1. Click / Actions in the toolbar and select the Plugins & widgets tab.
    2. Open the dropdown menu and select Development.
    3. Click next to your plugin or widget and select Publish.
  3. From the publishing modal, hover over the playground file section and click .
  4. Click Update to latest version.

Try out a playground file

  1. Open the Community page for a plugin or widget.
  2. Click Try it out.

If a playground file is available, it’ll be duplicated and opened from your draft folder.
