Before you Start

Who can use this feature

Users on any plan can search for files, projects, and people

Guests and members of an organization can search for teams in that organization

Members of an organization can search for private plugins

Want to search within a file? Check out our Find and replace text in Figma files and Find and replace text in FigJam boards articles.

Use the search bar from the file browser in Figma to quickly find what you need, including:

  • Files, projects, and teams you have access to
  • People who have access to the same resources, to view their contributions
  • Community resources, like plugins, widgets, and files
  • Private plugins (organizations only)

As you type your search keywords, Figma looks for matches with resource names, and displays a preview of your search results.

Figma also looks for matches from the text within Figma Design files and FigJam files. In FigJam, this includes text from stickies and shapes.

This article covers how to search for the above resources from the file browser. It also covers how to narrow those search results. Here are some other ways to search in Figma:

  • Find public files, plugins, and widgets from the Figma Community
  • Use quick actions from your file
  • Search for components from the assets panel

Search for a resource

To search for files, projects, and teams:

  1. From the file browser, click the search bar, or press:

    • macOS: ⌘ Command /
    • Windows: Control /

The search bar focuses and a search preview appears with a list of recently opened files.

  2. Select a filter option—resource type, file creator, or file location—and enter your search term. As you type, the preview updates with matching results.

  3. From there, you can:
    • See a full list of search results. Click See all results at the bottom of the preview, or press Enter/Return.
    • Open a resource by clicking on it. Or, use the↑ and ↓ arrow keys to navigate search preview results, then press Enter/Return to open it.

    • Right-click a resource for additional options, such as Open in new tab, Copy link to the resource, and more

    • Exit out of the search preview. Click anywhere outside the search area, or press Esc.

From the search results page, you can narrow your results further to find what you need. Learn how to narrow your results.

If an expected result isn’t appearing, it’s possible that you don’t have access to the resource. It's also possible that the file was created or updated recently. Search results are indexed periodically. If you have access to the resource, wait a few moments and try again.

Narrow your results

From the search results page, you can refine your search in the following ways:

Click on a resource type to narrow down your results. These include:

  • Files
  • Projects
  • People
  • Teams (guests and members of organizations only)
  • Private plugins (members of organizations only)
  • Widgets (members of organizations only)

On the Organization or Enterprise plan, you can filter search results by any organizations you have access to.

On the Enterprise plan, you can also filter by workspaces in your organization.

Tip: The option to filter by workspace appears after you select an organization to filter by.

Filter your results by Figma Design files or FigJam boards.

Sort your results by:

  • Relevance (default)
  • Name (A-Z, Z-A)
  • Last modified (oldest first, newest first)
  • Created (oldest first, newest first)

Visibility

Your search results will vary depending on the plan you're on, your seat types, and permissions to different resources.

Anyone on the Starter or Professional plans can:

  • Search for files and projects. Results will show files and projects you have access to.
  • Find people with whom you share resources, including files, projects, and teams.
  • Look for files, plugins, and widgets from the Figma Community.

In an organization, anyone can:

  • Search for files and projects. Results will show files and projects you have access to.
  • Find people with whom they share resources, including files, projects, and teams.
    • Organization members can find other members and guests in the organization.
    • Organization guests will only be able to find people with whom they share resources.
  • Look for files, plugins, and widgets from the Figma Community.
  • Search for organization teams they have access to. Teams that are set to Only those invited will not appear unless they have access.

Only organization members can find private plugins.
